Mock Tests vs the Real DVSA Test: What's Actually Different
Why a 50/50 mock score doesn't always translate to a pass, and how to close the gap before booking your real test.
Online mock tests are excellent revision tools, but the real DVSA test has a few quirks that can throw learners who have only practised at home.
Question phrasing
DVSA wording is precise and sometimes deliberately awkward. Practice questions written by third parties are often clearer — which means easier. Always read the official Highway Code alongside any practice tool.
Test conditions
- 57 minutes for 50 questions — about 68 seconds each.
- No phone, no notes, no chat. You sit at an individual screen with privacy panels.
- You can flag and review questions, but the clock keeps running.
- Hazard perception starts immediately after a short break.
When to book
A common benchmark: book your real test once you are scoring 47+ on three different full mocks in a row, and consistently getting 50+ on hazard perception practice. Anything less and a fail is a real risk.
Resit rules
If you fail, you must wait at least three working days before retaking. Use that gap — don't rebook for the next slot and hope for the best.
