FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything learners ask us about the UK driving theory test.

Is TheoryDrive.UK free?+

Yes. All practice questions, mock tests and revision guides are free to use. The site is supported by non-intrusive ads.

Is this the official DVSA test?+

No. TheoryDrive.UK is an independent revision aid. We are not affiliated with the DVSA. Our questions follow the same style and categories as the official theory test but the official test is only taken at a DVSA test centre.

How many questions are in the real theory test?+

50 multiple-choice questions in 57 minutes. You need 43 out of 50 to pass. There is also a separate hazard perception section with 14 video clips, requiring 44 out of 75 to pass.

How much does the real theory test cost?+

£23 when booked directly through gov.uk. Avoid third-party booking sites that add fees.

How long is a pass certificate valid?+

Two years. You must pass your practical driving test within that time or you will need to retake the theory test.

What happens if I fail?+

You must wait at least three working days before retaking, and pay the £23 fee again. Use the gap to revise your weak categories rather than rebooking immediately.

Does this site cover hazard perception?+

Not yet — currently we focus on the multiple-choice paper, road signs and revision strategy. Use the official DVSA hazard perception kit for clip practice.

Do you save my progress?+

Your scores are stored only in your browser's localStorage. They never leave your device and we do not require an account.

Can I use this on my phone?+

Yes. The site is fully responsive and works on any modern phone, tablet or desktop browser.

Which categories does the theory test cover?+

Alertness, attitude, safety and your vehicle, safety margins, hazard awareness, vulnerable road users, other types of vehicle, vehicle handling, motorway rules, rules of the road, road and traffic signs, documents, accidents, and vehicle loading.
