Alertness

Alertness is about noticing what is happening around you early enough to react calmly. Most questions test observation, distraction and knowing when to check your mirrors.

Key rules to know

  • Use the Mirrors – Signal – Manoeuvre routine before moving off, changing lanes, turning or slowing down.
  • It is illegal to hold and use a mobile phone while driving, including when stopped in traffic. Hands-free devices are still a distraction.
  • If you feel tired, stop somewhere safe and rest. Opening a window or turning up the radio is not a fix.
  • Check blind spots with a quick look over your shoulder before moving off or changing lanes — mirrors do not show everything.

How it applies on the road

Queueing traffic on a dual carriageway

Even at a standstill you must not pick up your phone. Wait until you are parked safely with the engine off.

Approaching a bend with parked cars

Slow down early and look for clues — a ball rolling out, feet under a van, or a car door starting to open.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking hands-free means 'safe'. It is legal, but it still takes your attention off the road.
  • Relying on mirrors alone when pulling out of a parking space.
