Attitude

Attitude questions check whether you drive patiently and considerately. The 'right' answer is usually the one that keeps everyone safe, even if it costs you a few seconds.

Key rules to know

  • Leave at least a two-second gap behind the vehicle in front on dry roads. Tailgating is dangerous and intimidating.
  • Flash your headlights only to let others know you are there — not to give priority or show annoyance.
  • Give way to buses pulling out from stops when it is safe to do so.
  • Do not use your horn while stationary, or in a built-up area between 11.30pm and 7am, unless another road user poses a danger.

How it applies on the road

A driver behind is tailgating you

Do not speed up or brake suddenly. Gradually increase the gap in front so you have more time to slow down smoothly.

Someone flashes their lights at a junction

Do not assume they are letting you out. Check it is safe and make your own decision.

Common mistakes

  • Treating a headlight flash as an invitation to go.
  • Speeding up to stop someone overtaking you.
