Motorway rules
Motorways are statistically safe, but speeds are high and mistakes have serious consequences. Questions focus on lanes, signals and stopping.
Key rules to know
- Keep to the left-hand lane unless overtaking, and return to it when it is safe.
- The national speed limit for cars on motorways is 70mph unless signs show a lower limit.
- Do not drive in a lane showing a red X — it is closed.
- Learners can drive on motorways only with an approved driving instructor in a car with dual controls.
- Only stop on the hard shoulder in an emergency.
How it applies on the road
Joining from a slip road
Build up speed on the slip road to match the traffic and give way to vehicles already on the motorway.
Overhead signs show a lower speed
Follow the mandatory limit inside a red ring. These limits are enforced.
Common mistakes
- Hogging the middle lane when the left lane is clear.
- Assuming a learner can practise on the motorway with a parent.
