Lesson
Other types of vehicle
Lorries, buses, motorcycles and trams behave differently from cars. This category tests whether you give them the space they need.
Key rules to know
- Long vehicles may need to swing out to the right before turning left. Stay well back and do not try to pass on the inside.
- Large vehicles have big blind spots. If you cannot see the driver's mirrors, they cannot see you.
- Give extra room to motorcyclists and cyclists in windy weather — they can be blown off course.
- Trams cannot steer around you. Never stop on tram lines.
How it applies on the road
A lorry signals left but moves right
It is making room for the turn. Hold back until it has completed it.
Overtaking a lorry in the rain
Spray will reduce your visibility. Leave a bigger gap and only overtake when you can see clearly ahead.
Common mistakes
- Squeezing alongside a turning lorry.
- Following a large vehicle too closely, which blocks your view of the road ahead.
