Rules of the road

This is the core of the Highway Code: speed limits, junctions, priorities and parking.

Key rules to know

  • National speed limits for cars: 30mph in built-up areas with street lights (unless signed otherwise), 60mph on single carriageways, 70mph on dual carriageways and motorways.
  • Since 2022, the Highway Code's hierarchy of road users means drivers should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross a side road you are turning into.
  • At a box junction, do not enter unless your exit is clear. You may wait in the box when turning right if only oncoming traffic is stopping you.
  • Do not park within 10 metres of a junction, except in an authorised space.

How it applies on the road

Turning left into a side road

A pedestrian is waiting to cross it. You should give way and let them cross first.

Roundabouts

Give way to traffic coming from your right unless signs or road markings say otherwise.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming 30mph applies everywhere with houses — check for signs.
  • Entering a box junction and getting stuck when traffic ahead stops.
